Third Grade Art

Art in grade 3 is a continued exploration of visual art. Students meet once a week for 40 minutes. In the art room, students will have an opportunity to explore and experiment with a wide variety of materials and techniques as well as continuing to be introduced to a selection of artists. The art curriculum will be tied into the classroom curriculum as much as possible.

Here are the key concepts we will be focusing on this year.

  • Color
    primary colors, secondary colors, warm/cool/neutral colors, complementary colors, tints and shades, color wheel
  • Characteristics of Line
    straight, curved, zigzag, connecting lines, line weight
  • Line Direction
    vertical, horizontal, diagonal, line weights, intersecting lines
  • Shape
    geometric and organic, concentric shapes
  • Space
    aerial perspective, overlapping, background, middle-ground, foreground, positive and negative space
  • Subject Matter
    self-portrait, portrait, still-life, landscape
  • Pattern
    repetition of line, shape, color, order and variety
  • Balance
    symmetry
  • Texture
  • 2D & 3D Art
    form, sculpture
